I’ve been using grids to transfer images to canvas, and more recently, I’ve started using carbon paper as well.
For realistic paintings, these methods beat freehand drawing by a huge margin in both speed and accuracy. It’s not about “cheating”, it’s about getting to the good part faster: the painting itself.
