Focusing on a single object naturally obscures the others, a concept I’ve explored in my recent work. Inspired by masters like Rembrandt and Velázquez, who soften or simplify elements further from the focal point, I take it a step further, dissolving peripheral objects entirely into the background.

This approach adds air to the composition while simultaneously conveying the idea how focus affects context.

Curious how I finished this painting? I’ve added the steps on how I do this:

1. I first block in the colors roughly. I pick a thick haired brush to achieve a rougher finish.
2. Once blocked in, it’s easier to compare the image with the result. I purposefully stand at arms length. This method allows me to get the general tones right first without losing myself too much in the details.
3. Finally I take a fine small brush to refine the details. Depending on how refined I want them to be I might let the painting dry first. With this one, I kept it rough, so I painted wet-in-wet.
4. Result.

Having never had any formal art education, there’s a lot of spontaneous learning along the way.

I recently discovered an amazing artist @carolinenelson.Art. I noticed these visible brushstrokes in the shadow of her composition, while she kept the lighter parts solid and opaque (swipe).

It’s a principle called ‘transparent shadow, opaque lights’ and helps to create greater depth and three-dimensionality. It juxtaposes luminous, atmospheric shadows to vibrant, textured highlights.

The current subject seemed like a good place to start applying this technique (swipe again for a sneak peak).
